Monarch Butterfly Tagging Event
The Monarch Butterfly is our only true migratory butterfly. The Monarch’s journey begins in late August in the northern United States and Southern Canada and ends in South Central Mexico, in early November. The return trip begins in early March when they leave the sanctuaries in Mexico and returning to where its great-great-grandparent’s journey began last fall. It takes several generations, starting in the gulf shore states before the butterfly’s northern trek is completed. Researchers put tags on these Monarchs to determine where they originated.

Join Denny Brooks for a Monarch Butterfly tagging event and help attempt to tag some migrating Monarch Butterflies. Denny will set up at the Lanigan Pavilion at the end of Homestead Road for this drop-in program. Butterfly nets will be provided to catch butterflies. In case of rain, the program will be rescheduled for Sunday, September 5.

F10-32 Big Island Lake Wilderness Canoe Adventure
The Big Island Lake Wilderness Area lies in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area features 23 small lakes, ranging in size from five to 149 acres. The lakes are situated among low, rolling hills and are connected by canoe portages.

Our group will leave CNC in a 15-passenger van at 7:00am. As we arrive at the Wilderness Area we'll carry our gear and canoes to Big Island Lake and paddle to a backcountry campsite. We'll spend the next three days exploring northern lakes, observing wildlife and enjoying the peaceful pace of the northern autumn forest. On foot, we'll also look for evidence of old logging camps, an old homestead and abandoned railroad grades.

CNC will provide canoes, paddles, PFDs, a group water filter and other group gear. Other gear, such as portage packs, backpacks, dry bags, tents and sleeping pads are available for loan at no extra charge (first-come, first-served). Participants are required to provide all other gear and their own meals throughout the trip (including cooking gear and stove).

A required pre-trip meeting to review gear recommendations, a preview of photos from the area and backcountry camping basics will be held on 8/24/2010 in the CNC's temporary Visitor Center. A suggested gear list will be mailed to participants at time of registration.

Bird Banding Research: Fall Migration Bandathon
This is a wonderful opportunity to see resident and migratory birds up close, as birds are caught in mist nets and banded for the purpose of research. Join Mike Bishop, researcher and president of the Michigan Bird Banding Association at the east wetlands parking lot off Grey road (the gate will be open during banding hours). This will be the last bird banding at the wetlands in 2010.

The parking area for bird banding is on the west side of Grey Road, about 1/8 mile beyond the parking lot for the Ridge Area. From Pine River Road, turn south on Grey Road, continue past the first parking lot on the left (Ridge Area), and turn into the first gravel drive on the RIGHT that doesn’t have a house or mailbox.

If it is raining or windy, banding will not take place.  If the weather is questionable, please call the front office at 989-631-0830 the day of the scheduled banding.

F10-29 Family Canoe Trip
Here's an opportunity to get your kids or grandkids out to enjoy a trip canoeing down the Chippewa River. Jenn Kirts will spend time teaching the basic skills of paddling canoes and then be there to help everyone navigate down the river. Paddling a canoe gives you a totally different perspective on the landscape and the rivers around you. Throughout the trip, you'll have a chance to discover some of the rarely seen critters of this aquatic environment and learn how to safely avoid common hazards on a river. Group size is kept small so that each paddler will receive good attention and instruction. If weather or water conditions are not favorable this trip will be canceled (determined by CNC) and participants will be refunded.
